Research abstract

Providing reliable power for dismounted Soldiers is critical to supporting asymmetric tactical advantages on the battlefield.  Providing this power is limited by the size and weight of conventional technologies such as batteries and currently fielded engine-powered generators. UPT has developed a compact, lightweight, fuel-flexible, oil-free generator technology that supports dismounted Soldier power needs with extremely limited maintenance.  The Portable Universal Lightweight Sustainable Energy (PULSE) effort aims to build on this oil-free engine technology by improving system power and energy density by increasing power output to 500W while keeping the system at less than 15 lbs, and 1000 cubic inches to support additional dismounted power demands.  Further, the effort will focus on improving overall system design modularity for applications such as robotics, and drones while increasing system durability and reliability as evaluated by various MIL-STD tests. The system's usability will also be improved by incorporating an autostart feature as well as expanding the fueling options to include bio-based green fuels to improve ecological sustainability.
