Research abstract

Rotary engines provide power density, fuel flexibility, reduced vibration, and simple construction desired for Navy UAS applications, but are less durable and efficient than other engine options. These limitations are primarily driven by the wear and, therefore, the sealing of the interface between the side and apex seals of the rotor, the trochoid housing, and the side housings. Rotary engine operation in marine environments tends to accelerate the degradation of components like rotor seals, rotor gearing, and housing. This is caused by corrosion, lubricant breakdown, salt and sand ingestion (FOD), and increased engine temperatures due to heat transfer limitations of higher humidity. UPT intends to deploy its highly corrosion-resistant and lubricious P51+ô diamond-like-carbon and patent-pending Continuous Operation Induced Lubrication (COILô) nano-composite coatings for rotary engine seal and housing applications. These oleophilic coatings have proven over 1000 hours of Jet-A, off-spec JP-8, and gasoline-fueled engine durability while maintaining low friction and reduced soot accumulation. Further, these coatings are extremely tolerant to particulate-laden, low viscosity lubricants while incorporating hydrophobicity to improve heat transfer. UPT intends to evaluate these coatings for rotary engine applications to improve durability and efficiency.
