Research abstract

During Phase I, research and experiments were conducted and a conceptual design was completed for a Remote Marine & Watercraft Surveillance System (RMWSS). RMWSS will detect powered and unpowered watercraft on riverine and inland waterways in South America. Based upon Phase I results, CME will develop an innovative system prototype that includes active and passive sensors to detect watercraft in day/night and in rain and fog across rivers up to 500m wide. A system prototype will include a network centric control and communications module, embedded software, power source, power management techniques, and unique electronic tripwire solutions that will counter the narco-terrorist threat via standoff riverine and jungle surveillance capabilities. The system approach inherently reduces the usual false alarms associated with sensors. Methods of eliminating false alarms will be investigated and integrated at the component, subsystem, and system levels. The Phase II prototype includes sensors, controller module, communications module, battery, and situational awareness application. During Phase II, CME will continue to work with a leading university research institution with extensive DoD experience dating back to World War II to transition their current research with RF systems, radar, ultra-wideband, millimeter wave, and digital signal processing.
