Research abstract

Achieving operational availability of mission systems is challenging for naval shipboard maintainers, who analyze large amounts of maintenance data to address equipment repair and replacement. To address this, we propose to extend and refine the Blended and Advanced Decision GUI Environment for Reasoning Support (BADGERS) GUI to specifically focus on supporting maintenance-oriented situation awareness and decision-making enabled by new analytics developed for the AN/SPY-3 Radar system under a parallel effort. Over multiple iterations of interface design, functional software prototyping, and design review with technical subject matter experts and representative maintainer end users, we will develop and refine a set of expanded BADGERS GUI components for targeted systems. These displays and interaction tools will build on prior BADGERS design concepts and software prototypes to enable maintainers to efficiently access and effectively interpret sensor data and alerting in ways that support rapid understanding of not just current system component status but also performance trends against maintenance-relevant thresholds, helping maintainers detect, understand, and project individual component health, performance, and downstream system and mission-level impacts to inform and operational control strategies and maintenance priorities. This work will culminate in the demonstration and test of operator-support tools for targeted systems.
