Research abstract

Obsidian Solutions Group (Obsidian) proposes VERTEX, an innovative training solution designed to address critical gaps in emergency response capabilities. VERTEX provides realistic, scenario-based training for Fire & Emergency Services (FES) and other first responders, enhancing readiness and operational effectiveness. Engaging with David Olsen, Fire Chief at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB), we identified the urgent need for improved training tools for high-consequence scenarios, especially with the impending arrival of the B-21 bomber.Real-world training for radiological scenarios is logistically and financially challenging. Obsidian’s Nuclear Enterprise Services division, with extensive experience in developing nuclear emergency responder training for various U.S. government agencies, is uniquely qualified to meet these needs. VERTEX leverages AR and VR technologies to create immersive training environments, involving precise GPS-RTK tracking, GIS-based simulations, and real-time data integration. This modular LVC platform includes wearables and technology-integrated training props, networked with VR experiences, and a desktop application serving as a common operating picture and scenario editor.Aligned with the Air Force Materiel Command’s strategic plan for 2023 and addressing the "Readiness to Deploy and Fight" operational imperative, VERTEX enhances situational awareness, preparedness, and decision-making capabilities. By reducing the need for costly live exercises and minimizing health risks, VERTEX ensures efficient resource allocation and effective training.
