Research abstract

The maintenance of rail ballast is critical for ensuring the stability and longevity of railway tracks. However, traditional methods of inspecting ballast for fouling and degradation are labor-intensive and often result in inaccurate assessments. Oceanit proposes the development of AIM Rail, an innovative portable machinelearning tool designed for rail ballast inspection. Rail ballast fouling, caused by the accumulation of debris and fine materials, poses significant challenges to railway safety and efficiency. Current inspection methods, relying largely on manual visual assessments, are inadequate for detecting subtle changes and early signs of fouling. AIM Rail aims to address these limitations by leveraging machine learning algorithms to analyze ballast conditions swiftly and accurately. The proposed technology offers several advantages over existing practices. By incorporating AI-driven image analysis, AIM Rail can detect and quantify ballast fouling more objectively and efficiently. This innovation promises to enhance railway maintenance strategies, enabling timely interventions to prevent track instability and reduce maintenance costs. Moreover, its portability allows for convenient on-site inspections, reducing downtime and operational disruptions.
