Research abstract

During an SBIR Phase II project to develop a manikin which could be used to teach Joint Articulation and Reduction (SIMETRIÆs ōJAARSö product), DoD medical program officers identified an additional opportunity for leveraging the JAARS technologyŚMilitary Working Dogs (MWDs). Unlike combat medicine, there is no centralized casualty database from which to compile and analyze canine wounds and wounding patterns. As a result, individual veterinarians, veterinary surgeons, and combat medics have been left to manage these cases by drawing on their own prior experience and ōgut feelings.ö At the same time, there is no realistic, cost-effective MWD veterinary simulator that covers critical conditions such as orthopedic injuries, chemical exposure, surgery, heat/cold weather injuries, and trauma-related injuries. Even the market-leading canine simulator, TacMedÆs Diesel, does not provide a complete solution. As a result, care providers have struggled to practice and receive feedback on these critical skills.
