Research abstract

Mission Power will develop a 150kW integrated Dual-Active Bridge (DAB) targeted for applications in vehicle charging. This program will leverage the work of the Mission Power 2022 DOE SBIR program ôPlanar Magnetic Solution for Vehicle Chargersö that developed a 150kW planar transformer and the 2023 DOE SBIR program ôIntegrated Dual-Active Bridgeö that is the predecessor to this program. Within a vehicle charging station of the future, there will likely be a Solid-State Transformer (SST) to convert 13kVAC to low voltage DC. The second stage will convert this low voltage DC to the actual voltage needed on the specific vehicle. With MW class trucks now on the market the need for higher power chargers will drive the desire for this architecture. The high-frequency DAB developed in this program will be usable for applications in a scale that is relevant to where vehicle charging is targeted. Mission Power has an experienced management and technical team that is well suited to bringing this product into production. The team includes serious technical personnel well skilled in magnetic design, power electronics design, and simulation. Further, the team includes experienced manufacturing and business personnel motivated to get the product to production quickly. Mission Power is experienced with the SBIR program and received five DOE SBIR phase I awards in 2022 & 2023. In 2023, Mission Power was awarded a $1.2M DOE incubator award for the development of a utility scale solar inverter. This was spun out into sister company Mission Sun that is performing this award. This program will leverage learning from all these programs to maximize the performance and minimize the cost of the system.
