Research abstract

Mission Power will develop a 3300V SiC based power module that will allow higher performance than currently available modules. SiC allows faster switching than Si power devices, but the circuit layout needs to be low inductance to take advantage of this higher switching speeds. Conventional modules are high inductance necessitating slowing down the switching speed and losing much of the advantage. The proposed module will have very low inductance. Solid State Transformers (SST)s require many power devices and could take advantage of the proposed module. The module will be 3300V and 800A providing significant power capability needed in the Electric Vehicle (EV) DC fast charging stations. This module will be built using SiC power devices and will directly mount the dies into a potted module to make it easier to integrate a package with the high frequency transformers in the SST. Efforts will be made to integrate the optimum number of circuit components to maximize flexibility while minimizing system cost. This program will design and analyze this module. Mission Power has an experienced management and technical team that is well suited to bringing this product into production. The team includes serious technical personnel who are well skilled in magnetic design, power electronics design, and simulation. Further, the team includes experienced manufacturing and business personnel motivated to get the product to production quickly at the lowest possible cost. Mission Power is experienced with the SBIR program and received five DOE SBIR phase I awards in the last two years. One of these programs was the basis for a 350kW utility scale solar inverter that successfully won a $1.2M DOE Incubator award. This product has been successfully spun out into a new company (Mission Sun) that is commercializing this product. Learnings from this program will be leveraged to maximize the performance and minimize the cost of the proposed system.
