Research abstract

The proposal introduces an innovative optical technology platform designed for the efficient additive manufacturing of bespoke vision correction lenses, aimed for integration into visors of respirators such as the Avon M50. The technology will display a range of gradient index (GRIN) lenses, offering diverse prescription strengths, including spherical, cylindrical, and intricate freeform polynomial functionalities. A method for individually tailoring the correction of both geometric and chromatic aberrations across bi-lateral vision corrections and for a broad human visual system parameter range will be detailed. Superior reduction in aberrations, surpassing the capabilities of conventional homogeneous index optical materials, will be highlighted. A preliminary visor model, incorporating tailored ophthalmological lenses for each visual hemisphere, will be unveiled. To ensure durability and resilience, test samples will be delivered to validate the lens's resistance to harmful chemicals such as warfare agents and demonstrate optical performance. This foundational work sets the stage for a subsequent Phase II initiative, in which a vision-correcting Avon M50 APR visor, meeting NIOSH standards will be engineered and prepared for military deployment.
