Research abstract

This project will develop a scalable, cost-effective additive manufacturing platform to fabricate rugged, modular laser eye protection (LEP) systems that meet the stringent demands of modern battlefields. Our innovative approach leverages highly transparent, UV-curable polymer nanocomposites embedded with precisely engineered, non-scattering ligand-coated nanoparticles and dopants. This formulation ensures exceptional visible light transmission while achieving an optical density (OD) of ?6 against laser threats across the UV, visible, and near-infrared (NIR) ranges. Rigorous multiphysics simulations, coupled with comprehensive optical, mechanical, and environmental testing, will validate our prototypes and establish a high-throughput manufacturing process capable of producing units for less than $50 each at scale. By integrating customizable, wavelength-specific protective elements directly into standard military ballistic frames, our breakthrough technology overcomes the limitations of current LEP solutionsóoften expensive, fragile, and incompatible with prescription eyewear. Ultimately, this innovation will enhance soldier safety and mission readiness in defense applications while also paving the way for advanced, low-cost infrared optics in industrial, consumer, and medical markets.
