Research abstract

The development of the proposed Adaptive Real-Time Intelligence for Signal Analysis and Navigation (ARTISAN) system begins with defining specific system requirements and designing an architecture that integrates with existing navigation warfare (NAVWAR) infrastructure and abides with modular and open-architecture standards. Existing machine-learning algorithms, originally designed for general radio frequency (RF) signal classification for irregular warfare missions, will be modified for NAVWAR purposes with an initial focus on electronic support (ES) algorithms and a subsequent focus on electronic protection (EP) using data from advanced signal classification algorithms. The ARTISAN prototype will extensively utilize commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) components to ensure cost-efficiency and will support a military GPS receiver. Initial algorithm testing will be completed in a non-real-time environment to verify basic functionality. Upon successful construction and validation, the prototype system will implement the ES and EP algorithms for real-time processing and testing. In the future, with minor modifications, the system could support electronic attack (EA), forming a comprehensive NAVWAR system that encompasses advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques. The project will culminate in a demonstration of the system, after which two real-time operational systems will be delivered to the Government for further evaluation and transition.
