Research abstract

Important Air Force electronics such as comms and ISR other electronics suffer from critically low battery life, risking warfighter safety and effectiveness in austere locations. Although the Air Force has spent tens of millions of dollars on next-generation battery cells for use in standard battery packs, various differences between these solutions and legacy lithium-ion products prevent their system integration and widespread implementation. To integrate next-generation battery cells into Air Force electronics, Haylon's novel circuitry designed for all types of battery cell technologies is necessary. Haylon Technologies, the developer of novel battery control systems, will design a circuit and software capable of seamlessly integrating any number of next-generation battery cell technologies into the widely-fielded BB2590 battery pack form-factor. In this Phase II, Haylon will develop prototypes that employ at least two different novel battery cells, and demonstrate that with Haylon's system, these innovations become fieldable products that increase battery life from 40-70%.
