Research abstract

Our physics-informed, micro-IMU array system provides a robust and reliable navigational aid that promises to remain so even within GPS-denied environments. Recognizing the criticality of precise navigation and positioning for maritime operations, especially in scenarios where GPS signals are compromised or unavailable, our advanced Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) system is designed to deliver exceptional accuracy and stability. Utilizing a combination of state-of-the-art MEMS technology, innovative sensor fusion algorithms, and a unique physics-informed machine learning (PIML) approach, the system ensures continuous and reliable tracking of position, velocity, orientation and time. This approach meets and exceeds the stringent performance criteria set forth by the Navy, providing a fail-safe navigational tool that is indispensable for strategic operations in challenging and unpredictable maritime environments.  Our proposed approach centers around an innovative strategy that combines the use of multiple, arrayed low-cost IMU and clock systems with advanced machine learning techniques.  In addition, it offers enhanced robustness, failure detection and uncertainty prediction capabilities that a single, highly-accurate point-measurement IMU system cannot, but providing the same interface and functionality as a traditional IMU system. Through its adaptability, precision, and resistance to GPS signal interference, our proposed IMU system stands as a pivotal advancement in navigational technology, bolstering the Navy's operational capabilities in GPS-denied scenarios.
