Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force (DAF) faces escalating threats from small unmanned aerial systems (SUAVs), which pose significant risks to secure installations and operations. These sUAVs can be used for surveillance, carrying contraband, or even as direct attack weapons, which are particularly dangerous in swarm configurations. This increasingly prevalent threat surface necessitates a robust, discreet countermeasure that enhances the security of sensitive areas without compromising operational secrecy. The FOVEA system addresses this critical need by offering a Counter-SUAV (C-SUAV) that combines biologically inspired detection capabilities with cutting-edge technology. FOVEA utilizes an array of highly sensitive "super-receptors," inspired by human and avian vision systems, which are capable of detecting rapid changes in the aerial environment. This allows for the early detection of SUAVs at significant distances, enhancing response times and operational security, without emitting an RF signature that could be targeted by near-peer adversaries.  Our initial technical feasibility studies have demonstrated that FOVEA’s approach is not only viable but also superior to existing solutions. These studies included extensive simulations and lab-based experiments to validate the sensitivity and response time of the super-receptors, confirming their ability to detect multiple sUAVs under various environmental conditions and scenarios.  For the proposed Phase II effort, we aim to further develop and refine FOVEA to achieve a performant TRL 6 prototype solution that is ready for testing in operationally representative conditions. Anticipated technical outcomes include the deployment of a fully functional prototype with proven real-world efficacy in detecting and tracking multiple sUAVs simultaneously. This phase will also expand upon our initial studies to include larger-scale demonstrations and the integration of feedback mechanisms to ensure continuous improvement of the system.
