Research abstract

In this project, inkjet print (IJP) additive manufacturing (AM) will be used to develop nanocomposite molds for rubber compression molding. The project emphasizes the use of a wide array of nanofillers to enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of high temperature polymers. Analytical techniques will assess the composition, aiding in the creation of test structures for in-depth mechanical and thermal analysis. The project will showcase the capability to IJP fabricate nanocomposite molds in various complexities and sizes, evaluating their mechanical and thermal properties. Phase I aims to produce and demonstrate proof-of-concept molds, focusing on achieving precise dimensional tolerances and surface finishes. This project seeks to prove the viability and advantages of AM nanocomposite molds for naval applications, paving the way for a Phase II program. This next phase will concentrate on refining the materials and IJP process parameters to IJP manufacture cost effective, durable, high-quality molds for rubber compression molding.
