Research abstract

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, with their exceptional specific capacity of sulfur (1,675 mAh g-1) and energy densities ranging from 150 to 600 Wh kg-1, surpass commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) by up to three times (150 to 250 Wh.kg-1), making them the most promising candidates for next-generation space vehicles, electric vehicles (EV) and portable electronics. espite their theoretical potential, the practical specific energy of Li-S batteries falls significantly short, reaching less than 15% of the anticipated valueClick or tap here to enter text.. This discrepancy results from several challenges that hinder the commercialization of Li-S batteries. Recent studies on laboratory-scale coin cells have highlighted the critical role of lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling in deteriorating the cycling stability of Li-S batteries. We will be employing a holistic approach in addressing the polysulfide shuttling effect in Li-S batteries. Our holistic approach will focus on mitigating polysulfide shuttling in all the key components of the Li-S cells including the cathode, electrolyte, separator, and anode. The Phase 1 project will focus on demonstrating polysulfide shuttling mitigation with our unique cathode design and electrolyte composition. This will be demonstrated in Li-S coin cells while also building electrochemical models to gain insights into the performance of different cell formats (coin, pouch and 18650) under different operating conditions.
