Research abstract

Ditto is a cross-platform, peer-to-peer, light-weight database that allows mobile device apps to sync with and even without network connectivity. Installing Ditto into mobile device applications and/or operating system, allows APIs to read and write data into its storage system on the device and then syncs any changes to any other device. Unlike other synchronization solutions, Ditto is designed for "peer-to-peer" synchronization where it can directly communicate with other devices even without a network connection. In addition, Ditto automatically manages the complexity of using multiple network transports, like Bluetooth, P2P Wi-Fi, Local Area Network, and tactical radios to find the optimal path, connect to other devices, and synchronize any implemented changes in the application. In short, Ditto enables:Blazing fast peer-to-peer and client-server synchronizationConcurrent edits and conflict resolutionOffline Caching with an embedded databaseCross platform support on Web Browsers, iOS, Android, IoT, and server-side applicationsReplicating structured data and even small or large binary files Ditto provides a complete software platform (Edge Sync Platform) to enable nearly any type of computing system to share data in a real-time mesh network. The platform consists of two different parts: “Small Peer” and “Big Peer.” The Small Peer is an SDK designed to be embedded in edge systems – such as mobile devices or other Internet Protocol based processors. Small Peer securely stores data on the host device for offline access in disconnected environments and provides a level of communications resiliency in degraded communication environments. When network communications are available, Ditto chooses the optimal path of transport, such as Bluetooth or Direct Wi-Fi or network (internet, cell-tower, etc.), to transmit changes to, and from, any other systems. Unlike other data synchronization approaches, Ditto does not require a central server, and instead operates in a peer-to-peer mechanism that creates a data-sharing mesh network, allowing devices to communicate directly with each other. This provides maximum flexibility to solve some of the toughest data communications challenges. This effort will see the deployment to Cloud One (or equivalent USAF cloud infrastructure) of an accredited Ditto Big Peer to provide communications and data management to connected mobile devices. This accreditation will provide a means to store data at IL-4, allowing for more missions to sync data and more devices to be deployed. Research will be conducted to gather information on the necessities for high-side deployment to ensure data capture at IL-6 and above. At completion, service members with mobile devices will have the ability to communicate in DDIL environments while also syncing mission data upon connectivity. This will result in cost savings from traditional radio-based communications while lowering the barrier to entry for operators to communicate and execute.
