Research abstract

"e propose a novel design of a chip-scale gyro consisting of a ring laser fabricated on a ~cm2 SiN photonic integrated circuit to leverage the ultra-low loss of this materialĀand operated at an exceptional point to significantly increase the scale factor over that of a conventional ring laser gyro. The exceptional point will be created by optically coupling two rings together at the proper coupling rate. One ring will exhibit gain, provided by an overlay of III-V material, while the other ring will be slightly lossy. The two rings will be nested together to significantly reduce the high temperature sensitivity of such coupled structures when operated at an exceptional point. The project will involve modeling the sensitivity of this system, of the noise sources including gain saturation to at least partially mitigate the excess noise known to exist in a laser at an exceptional point, and refining the design to converge to a preliminary design of integrated gyro that meets performance requirements, including signal processing.
