Research abstract

Metal cold spray (CS) is an additive manufacturing technology that can be used in production and more commonly in maintenance and repair of metallic structures. Lockheed Martin Company (LMCO) and the Boeing Company (Boeing) have collaborated under the Air Force Metals Affordability Initiative to demonstrate a specific cold spray process for adding material for improved structural performance of fatigue critical structure on the F-35. TRI Austin in collaboration with LMCO and Boeing propose to develop and demonstrate the nondestructive inspection (NDI) techniques to prove initial quality assurance and to maintain acceptable risk of cold spray modified structures per the Air Force standards for airworthiness per the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) MIL-STD-1530D.
