Research abstract
The advent of Generative AI (GenAI) tools, exemplified by ChatGPT, has significantly escalated the sophistication and frequency of cyberattacks. Post-ChatGPT launch, unique phishing emails have increased by 1,265%, now constituting 91% of all breaches, with an average breach cost of $9.48 million. Jericho Security leads in countering these threats, pioneering GenAI defensive solutions to safeguard both corporate and military digital infrastructures.Jericho Security employs GenAI to mitigate AI-driven cyberattacks, focusing on email spear phishing—a predominant breach vector due to its exploitation of valuable data and human vulnerabilities. Advanced GenAI techniques have spawned more sophisticated phishing attacks across multiple channels, including SMS, video conferencing, and phone calls. These attacks leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate highly convincing and adaptive phishing messages, further personalized through open-source intelligence (OSINT), complicating detection and mitigation.Key challenges posed by LLM-enabled cyber threats include:Rapid Evolution of Threats: LLMs enable unique attacks that evade traditional defenses based on known patterns or signatures.Targeted Spear Phishing: LLM-generated messages closely mimic authentic communications with hyper-personalized details, making detection difficult even for vigilant recipients.Multi-Channel Attacks: GenAI facilitates coordinated attacks via emails, text messages, voice calls, and deep fake video calls, increasing their effectiveness and danger. To counteract these threats, the cybersecurity field must adapt by employing GenAI defensively. A forward-thinking vision involves creating an ecosystem where defensive GenAI not only matches but surpasses attackers' capabilities. This requires a self-sustaining training system where AI continuously evolves by simulating and countering attacks, forming a dynamic defense mechanism that anticipates and neutralizes threats preemptively.Utilizing LLMs and GenAI solutions defensively enables warfighters to detect and analyze textual intent, identifying anomalous patterns indicative of LLM-assisted attacks. In Phase I, feasibility was vetted with Air Force stakeholders. Phase II aims to expand GenAI-powered solutions, generating multi-vector simulated cyberattacks, refining defenses based on usage and third-party OSINT, and enhancing the system's ability to counter sophisticated threats. This approach fosters a virtuous training cycle that bolsters cybersecurity defenses. This comprehensive strategy ensures robust protection against the evolving landscape of AI-powered cyber threats, securing a safer digital environment for the future.
