Research abstract

Traditional Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar systems are often limited by their geographical positioning, cost, and operational adaptability. This proposal introduces a novel approach to efficient surveillance for near-persistent coverage, leveraging a scalable Radio Frequency System on Chip (RF SoC)-based multi-purpose architecture and waveform strategy for rapid set-up, communications, or other multifunctional purposes. We propose new techniques to enhance angular resolution and precision, potentially enabling precision approach guidance. Additionally, we will develop a multi-dimensional scanning technique for persistent counter-Unmanned Aerial System (cUAS) surveillance and analyze the potential for long range detection. Building on the successful Phase I demonstration, the unique spatial and spectral capability of the Frequency Diverse Array (FDA) radar will be further developed. The project  will evaluate performance through simulation, lab testing, and multiple integration and demonstration events using purpose-built frequency diversity array radar prototype boards, showcasing scalability, affordability, and performance.
