Research abstract

ZKxKZ, with subcontractors Calibre Biometrics and JL Gallagher, propose to use the current commercial version of Calibre’s wearable metabolic sensor as a starting point, then selectively modify this baseline’s hardware and software to meet or exceed the more demanding requirements presented in the DHA solicitation for this Direct to Phase II program. As our technical proposal will show, ZKxKZ performed a pre-proposal trade study that included an initial evaluation of about fifteen commercial systems, then down-selected to four that best matched the list of DHA requirements with existing hardware. We further reduced our list of candidates to two, before finally making the judgement that the commercial Calibre system offers the strongest starting position to address the Phase II requirements.  In Phase II the proposal team will critically evaluate the baseline sensor against the requirements, then work with DHA to develop a prioritized list of technology improvements and modifications. New software features will be added, including a trainer application that will allow military superiors to assess performance across a cohort of individual users. In parallel, we will design and develop an add-on module that can be used with commercial metabolic simulators to greatly enhance the ability of these mechanical systems to generate high fidelity outputs that can be tuned to better replicate the characteristics of actual human breathing at all levels of exertion. The Phase II  program will conclude with delivery of two updated hardware / software systems to DHA.
