Research abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) used in taxi and rideshare services are facing challenges with battery lifetime, charging speeds, and durability, limiting their effectiveness in the world's largest EV fleet network. Our project aims to address these limitations by developing an innovative battery technology with enhanced lifetime, rapid charging capabilities, and improved durability across a wide range of temperatures. In Phase I, we will focus on the initial development and testing of a new Si-LVO anode material. This involves synthesizing the anode, integrating it into battery cells, and evaluating its performance in terms of energy density, charge rates, and operational stability. At the end of the project, we will fabricate 500 mAh multilayer pouch cells with Si-LVO anode paired with high energy NMC cathodes that demonstrates <10-minutes fast charge time to 80% SOC, >4,000 cycles (equal to > 1.24 million miles EV life range) performance and achieving safe charging down to -30 ºC. The successful development of this battery technology has the potential to significantly extend the operational lifetime and reduce the charging times of EVs in taxi and rideshare fleets, contributing to lower operational costs, increased driver earnings, and reduced environmental impact.
