Research abstract

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Maritime shipping constitutes a significant portion of global CO2 emissions, posing a challenge for near-term decarbonization efforts. As maritime activities expand, this contribution to emissions grows, exacerbated by the sector's emission of other harmful pollutants. The reliance on traditional Maritime Fuel Oil perpetuates environmental degradation and hampers progress towards climate goals, necessitating innovative solutions like onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) to mitigate emissions effectively and address operational challenges in heavy-duty overland and marine transportation. SOLUTION: This project aims to address the problem of carbon emissions from maritime vessels and heavy-duty overland transport by developing OCCS technology integrated into exhaust gas post-treatment systems. By capturing CO2 emissions directly from mobile sources, this solution seeks to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance decarbonization efforts in the transport sector. PHASE I: Objective 1: Development of a PDP for 50 TPD CO2 capture system Objective 2: Analyze opportunities and design a preliminary CO2 offtake and transport plan targeting utilization and/or sequestration of CO2 Objective 3: Develop a techno-economic analysis of the proposed solution and compare alternative maritime decarbonization approaches based on cost, operational complexity, and environmental impact. Final Deliverable: A design and feasibility study of CRĺs compact OCCS for deployment on maritime vessels including: 1. OCCS process description 2. PFD, P&ID & H&MB 3. Utility consumption and other operational requirements 4. 3D System Model 5. Preliminary CO2 Offtake Plan 6. Techno-Economic Analysis COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS AND OTHER BENEFITS: If successful, the project will pave the way for widespread adoption of OCCS technology in maritime shipping and heavy-duty overland transportation, offering a practical and cost-effective solution for reducing carbon intensity and mitigating emissions from mobile sources. Additionally, the technology can be extended to other applications such as offshore oil rigs, diversifying its impact and improving air quality in surrounding communities.
