Research abstract

In June 2021, The International Maritime Organization (ōIMOö) established short-term measures to reduce the carbon intensity of all vessels by 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Carbon RidgeÆs Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS) system can capture up to 90% of vessel CO2 emissions, providing a compact, efficient, and fuel-agnostic solution to reduce emissions. Ā Carbon Ridge is a US-based developer of modular carbon capture and storage systems for maritime vessels. Carbon RidgeÆs innovative compact process technology enables 90%+ CO2 reduction from vessel exhaust systems, as well as reduces emissions of Nitrous Oxide (NOx), Sulphur Dioxide (SOx), and Particulate Matter (PM) by 99.8%+. In comparison to conventional CCS systems that use packed columns, Carbon RidgeÆs solution provides an 85%+ reduction in overall process equipment volume, increased efficiency due to a 30:1 increase in mass transfer rates, and is negligibly affected by the operational disturbances of marine environments (such as variable operating patterns, and ship movements such as tilt and vibration.) By utilizing their proprietary contactors and solvents, Carbon RidgeÆs OCCS system is highly efficient in limiting overall parasitic load to the vessel for an operation to under 5% (based on current vessels analyzed.) Carbon Ridge intends to build upon this success by expanding into the LM2500 surface combatant to attribute to a net carbon reduction for the Navy. Ā Carbon RidgeÆs technology systems are practical on Naval ships, minimizing the impact on current ship systems and addressing the problem of space requirements on current and future vessels.
