Research abstract

The Navy seeks flexible polymer-ferroic composites for high-power applications such as directed energy microwaves, high energy-density capacitors, and tunable antenna arrays.  In response to this need, Corvid Technologies LLC. (Corvid), in collaboration with The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) and University of North Carolina – Charlotte (UNCC), will produce a digital design and manufacturing pipeline to produce customized, high-performance, flexible electronic components using ceramic ferroelectric mesostructures infiltrated with polymer matrices. To support this effort, Corvid and Penn State will utilize mesoscale modeling software to design ceramic mesostructures, predict composite performance, and develop a machine learning model. We will then use these results and machine learning model to design an optimized ferroelectric mesostructured, which we will additively manufacture in collaboration with UNCC. This effort will also be supported by the evaluation of key stereolithography technical parameters, such as projection technique, scan speed, solid loadings percentage, and others. Finally, during the Option period, we will perform modeling of the electrical breakdown strength of the composites to further optimize and design the composite design, as well as print a green ferroelectric ceramic mesostructure.
