Research abstract

Remote magnetometry has recently been demonstrated at 100+ kilometers using naturally occurring sodium atoms in the mesosphere at high altitude. In this proposal, we propose to develop Radar-REMPI (Resonance Enhanced Multiphoton Ionization) schemes for naturally existing 129xenon in air for standoff magnetometry. A combined approach of optical pumping scheme and Radar off the resulting Xe plasma will be undertaken: (1) demonstrate Radar REMPI detection of 129Xenon using three-photon excitation in a vapor cell, showing the detection limit. (2) Fluorescence detection of time for spin to transfer from an excited electron to the nuclear spin during the REMPI readout. The research will be conducted to develop an experimental setup utilizing ultrashort pulse lasers to efficiently induce multi-photon excitation. The investigation includes optimizing laser parameters, measuring spin transfer times during REMPI readout, and assessing the sensitivity and selectivity of the radar REMPI signal.
