Research abstract

For this Phase I SBIR program, NanoSonic proposes to design and demonstrate a modular lithium-ion battery containment system that is easily scaled to accommodate the various form factors, energy densities, capacities, and operating voltages utilized in Naval shipboard energy storage installations. This innovative, panelized system will protect large, rack-mounted battery installations from the shock, vibration, penetration, and heat exposure that are encountered during routine operations and in turn, protect the ship and crew in the event of a catastrophic battery failure. Further, the containment system will be designed to accommodate battery modules having various dimensions and importantly, afford thermal isolation between these modules.
