Research abstract

In the quest to enhance military aircraft's safety and operational readiness, detecting hidden corrosion, especially in hard-to-access areas like rivet connections in layered structures, presents a significant challenge. Traditional corrosion detection methods, such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) systems, while effective, fall short in accurately pinpointing corrosion without invasive procedures, leading to increased maintenance time and costs. Addressing this critical gap, Beacon Industries Inc. proposes an innovative solution that combines the precision of electromagnetic inspection techniques with the predictive power of machine learning algorithms. This advanced corrosion detection system is designed to non-invasively locate and assess concealed corrosion with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency. By leveraging a dataset derived from real-world corrosion scenarios to train the machine learning model, the system promises to reduce false positives and negatives significantly, streamlining the maintenance process, reducing operational costs, and, most importantly, ensuring the integrity and reliability of military aircraft. This technology holds the potential to revolutionize corrosion detection in the military sector and offers promising applications for civilian aviation, where safety and cost-efficiency are paramount.
