Research abstract

Sustainment operations need the latest Corrosion Control systems to perform work effectively and efficiently in support of the warfighter. In addition, as Corrosion Control systems evolve and become integrated on the shop floor to AR/VR technology, there is a risk that using these systems become burdensome to a user who must learn how to use multiple systems, experience different look and feel of data, and learn to use different AR/VR hardware and software. Advanced tools, machines, knowledge, and skills are needed to resolve maintenance issues in order to address and reduce aircraft corrosion that eventually causes maintenance to be delayed. Additionally, advanced AR tools provide an opportunity for better training, as stored results can be shared as After Action Review learning material for the sustainment professional as well as larger groups. ARCS’ approach will expand upon feasibility demonstrated in previous SBIR research and development (R&D) projects, internal research and development (IRAD), and features, techniques, and technologies developed in response to commercial needs and projects, managed within the framework we have successfully used in past DAF SBIR projects. ARCS will meet with TPOC and end users and perform Business Process Review, discuss Corrosion Control systems, discuss the end user experience with technology, and discuss Technology Insertion opportunities; design a system infrastructure to enable centralized computing and data storage with elements from the Approved Products List, leveraging experience from submitting RMF package for Authority to Operate to guide decision-making to enable implementation during commercial phase; design and develop an end user interface allowing easily access to results data from different corrosion control systems; adapt two existing ARCS Corrosion Control applications, Paint Thickness Scanner Augment Reality Augmented Reality integration(Paint ScannAR) and Uniwest EVI Eddy Current Surface Probe C-Scan Augmented Reality integration (NDI-HUD) to the new common results interface; design and develop a new Visual Inspection application and utilize the new common results interface; experiment and ideally adapt ARCS’ Nortec 600D Eddy Current I-Plane Augmented Reality system to the new common results interface (at a minimum, a report of experiments performed, findings, and required next steps will be submitted to the Government); and experiment and ideally develop a new X-Ray application and utilize the new common results interface (at a minimum, a report of experiments performed, findings, and required next steps will be submitted to the Government).
