Research abstract

ARCS Aviation (ARCS) has developed a project solution to meet the Governmentĺs needs as described in Topic AF233-D008: AR for Equipment Maintenance that leverages past research, a low-risk high-reward research and development extension of existing capabilities, and integration of teammate technologies focused on fostering end user success. ARCS has successfully delivered SBIR projects from Phase I into Phase III to benefit Depart of Air Force (DAF) maintainers, integrating the latest Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Extended Reality (AR/VR/XR) technologies into DAF business processes and will apply the same project approach to this Topic. ARCS has carefully reviewed the Topic description, discussed the Topic with the TPOC Minh Ngo, Lead Engineer, 76MXSG/MXDEQ, assessed the applicability of our previous feasibility studies, and assembled a small team of complementary technology subcontractors to create a project concept that will not only meet the requirements of the Topic, but do so in a way that is unique in the industry through the application of cognitive and emotive science. Analyzing the available information on the DAFĺs needs for this Topic, ARCS and our teammates extracted the following key requirements: AR job aids for preventive and corrective maintenance; VR training modules for equipment and procedures; Ingestion and presentation of equipment sensor data; and Technology use must reflect the needs of the individual learner. The Topic does an excellent job outlining the benefits of the solution, such as improved efficiency, reduced time, lower costs, improved safety, and increased accuracy. ARCS and the team have experience and foundational technologies that can deliver these results: ARCS has developed tools, techniques, and templates for AR and VR solutions, and experience importing sensor and diagnostic data streams from commercial systems such as Eddy Current testers and processing and/or presenting these data in AR. Teammate 3D Media developed the Maintenance Augmented Reality Solution (MARS) to identify, create, represent, distribute, conduct, and enable the adoption and leveraging of good practices embedded in collaborative settings and in organizational processes for US Air Force Maintainers, presented in ARá á á á á áA predictive AI model
