Research abstract

BUNDLAR's Containerized Augmented Reality Bundles, A.R.C.H.E.R. (Augmented Reality Containers for High-performance Enhancement and Readiness), built using the BUNDLAR Content Management System (CMS), directly supports the Air Force Science and Technology Strategy 2030 by enhancing rapid and effective decision-making through improved human-machine teaming. BUNDLAR's platform-agnostic augmented reality solution allows for heterogeneous use across any AR/XR or Spatial computing platform, supporting maintenance operations, training activities, and mission planning for Agile Combat Employment. The critical need for A.R.C.H.E.R. arises from personnel shortfalls, increased mission tempo, and high operations workload that negatively impact outcomes. BUNDLAR's solution improves human effectiveness by optimizing data presentation, reducing cognitive load, and enabling multi-capable airmen to make better decisions faster using the tools they have at hand, rather than relying on a specific device. The hands-free AR delivery on devices like HoloLens further accelerates efficiency and effectiveness for airmen executing defense missions worldwide, while also being accessible from Airmen's Mobile Devices. The containerization of BUNDLAR bundles allows the content to be accessible on any AR platform for display and interactivity, starting with the Microsoft HoloLens. A.R.C.H.E.R. demonstrates direct support for the Operational Imperatives of Resilient Basing and Readiness to Deploy and Fight. The main goals of this project are to reduce training timelines by 55%, improve maintenance task accuracy by 60%, and decrease operational errors due to lack of experience by 90%. The mission impact of A.R.C.H.E.R. on the Air Force and the Department of Defense will be to provide the Air Force with the strategic capability to enable rapid and effective decision-making by multi-capable airmen through accelerated skills acquisition and enhanced knowledge retention using BUNDLAR's augmented reality training bundles. It will also improve operational efficiency and readiness by optimizing human-machine teaming for complex missions with BUNDLAR's customizable augmented reality interface. Finally, it will also increase adaptability and lethality of personnel by providing interactive 3D training content that is accessible and hands-free on HoloLens2 AR headsets, Android devices, and iPhones, anytime, anywhere. The implementation of BUNDLAR's platform-agnostic augmented reality platform will equip airmen with rapid, effective decision-making capabilities to support agile combat employment, aligning with the Air Force Science and Technology Strategy 2030 for advanced human-machine teaming to dominate time, space, and complexity in future conflicts.
