Research abstract

The Navy needs a method to reliably inspect aerial cables subject to environmental corrosion. Current methods are subjective as they rely on human inspection with binoculars from the ground. This requires significant resources and is highly variable. We propose a UAV based sensor system to autonomously asses cable corrosion. We propose to use spectral analysis in the visible and infrared bands linked to machine learning to improve corrosion detection.
