Research abstract

Dynovas’ Pallet Automated Loading System (PALS) is an autonomy-enabled, size-tailored, terrain-adaptive, tracked pallet-handling solution designed to answer the call for an automated 463L pallet load/unload transportation system to/from the C-130J Super-Hercules cargo plane. PALS utilizes a novel combination of motors and actuators to navigate the C-130 loading ramp, align the 463L pallet, mechanically fasten to low profile 463L pallet connection points, and remove/deposit the payload. As PALS traverses down the ramp from the C-130, the pallet baseplate onboard PALS is kept parallel to the C-130 cargo bay, allowing the 463L to be dragged onto the system and kept upright, reducing the risk of pallet tipping. To load pallets back into the C-130 cargo bay, PALS traverses up the ramp to the C-130 and pushes the pallet into place with the same system used to unload. PALS is baselined navigate to the desired drop-off zone in a semi-automated fashion, avoiding obstacles such as rocks, mounds, craters, and creeks. The robust drivetrain system is designed with all-purpose tracks that can navigate unknown rough terrains. The entire PAL System is packaged a single 463L pallet in the stowed configuration for transportation onboard the C-130 that can carry a reduced load during flight.
