Research abstract
Machine Learning (ML) is poised to revolutionize military operations, offering unprecedented opportunities for innovation and discovery both on and off the battlefield, while also increasing the pace of warfare. Technologies that once were science fiction are now coming into regular use thanks to leaps in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly around ML. We envision a future where every Warfighter possesses an AI-powered device that supports visualization, understanding, and decision-making faster and more accurately than their adversaries. ML finds solutions to tasks previously unsolvable in traditional computing, yet carries many of the same logistical challenges of managing and deploying software systems in a tactical environment. ML offers innovations to military operations, and our solution, Watchtower+AIM, integrates ML into tactical environments using Watchtower, a TRL 9 GOTS Mobile Device Manager (MDM). Watchtower was developed to meet the specific demands of the US Government and the tactical enterprise environment with demonstrated utility and over 35,000 users to date. Combining MDM and ML Management into a single software facilitates an intuitive solution for managing AI/ML on end user devices (EUD). Watchtower+AIM provides organizations standardized building, testing, delivering, and monitoring of AI solutions. The integration of ML in tactical environments presents multifaceted challenges, ranging from provisioning devices with new tools and data to ensuring proper setup and controls (configuration management), device security, and managing data flow to and from users. The proposedáobjectives discuss the impact and solutions for these challenges. Poorly deployed MLMs risk producing erroneous or dangerous results when used beyond their intended boundaries or in unforeseen conditions. Device management in a tactical environment follows a similar lifecycle for MLMs, encompassing the essential stages of comparison, deployment/update, evaluation, and training/fine-tuning. The existing Watchtower controls assist TAK devices in effectively managing the complete lifecycle of ML deployments at scale, ensuring operational excellence and optimal performance throughout the process. Collaborating with key teammates Raytheon BBN, Lockheed Martin, Technergetics, Kitware, and Sheepdog, Sherpa 6 leverages our extensive expertise in ML, MDM, TAK, and program of record transitions, reducing risk and cost for the Government. Most importantly, we are providing Warfighters an upgrade to an already fielded and widely accepted tool for mission-critical success. Sherpa 6 is a SDVOSB with a five-year history of solving complex problems for our mission critical customers in both the DoD and civilian sectors. Sixty-eight percent of all employees at Sherpa 6 are current or former service members, imbuing relevant operational context and understanding to all our products.
