Research abstract

Quidient proposes to leverage its Quidient Reality® Platform to develop the updated proposed Automated Visual Inspection & Database Prototype System (AVID-4500). The system will include a 5D scanning application enabling mobile devices, like tablets and small COTS cameras, to become highly capable 3D Automated Visual Inspection (AVI) tools. Quidient’s solution is an enhanced visual augmentation tool for Airmen to use in conjunction with current sustainment practices, including aircraft specific Technical Orders that are specified by the SPO. The system will improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and speed of inspecting aircraft surface areas for anomalies (e.g., delamination, exfoliation, dents, scratches) that impact operational readiness on aircraft like the B-52H. Quidient’s solution provides Airmen a robust, modernized tool / capability in the palm of their hands to complete their tasks more efficiently and effectively to return aircraft to operation faster. The AVID-4100 Prototype proposed under this Phase II project initially targets Aircraft Exterior Surface Inspections on the B-52H. The B-52H is one of the largest and oldest Air Force assets in the inventory and is comprised of both metal and composite surfaces requiring inspection, monitoring, and repair to ensure serviceability and keep the aircraft operational for decades to come. The Application is a prime example of a ‘light-weight,’ but important application enabled by the Quidient Reality® Platform. This application will significantly improve operational efficiency, aircraft availability, and overall mission readiness. Additionally, the highly accurate 3D+ digital models (Digital Twins) will strengthen each asset’s historical maintenance record. The models will also enable remote diagnostics because the models can be easily shared with higher level craftsman experts to review, assess, and provide key remote technical support as needed.
