Research abstract

The core of the EMC2 system is the Advanced Compression System.  The Advanced Compression System uses a variable speed screw compressor.  Variable speed screw compressors, such as the Helic 44mm compressor have been proven in harsh military aircraft environments, and there are more of these types of compressors in the U.S. military inventory than any other type, with very high in-service reliability. In general, screw compressors are rugged, attitude insensitive, robust machines that have accumulated tens of thousands of operating hours in the most extreme aircraft environments, making this compressor the optimum choice for this type of operating environment.  Bascom Hunter's advances is compressor screw design and system control has improved compressor operating efficiency in order to manage higher heat loads in a smaller functional package.  HALT testing the Advance Compression System will prove out the design, demonstrate system reliability and prepare the hardware for production readiness.
