Research abstract

Amalgamated Vision (AV) is an engineering company that designs and builds optical engines to be the core display component for the next generation of head-mounted display (HMD).  Our unique optical design and engineering principles allow for capabilities that differentiate our visual augmentation paradigm from all other commercial HMD products utilized by the DAF.  The AV optical engine is based on laser beam scanning (LBS), a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS), and unique diffuser/pancake lens optics to create a virtual retinal display (VRD).  Images are projected directly into the eye and onto the retina; there is no display screen.  This allows for an extremely small size and lightweight module with a high-quality image and large field of view.  The display is bright and usable in direct sunlight. HMD with AV inside will not obstruct the primary visual field, allowing for complete environmental awareness and a clear view of the user’s hands, tools, and tasks.  These capabilities are not achievable with see-through, or combiner optics within HMD currently used by the military.  AV display can provide an augmented reality or smart glass experience and can be worn in a monocular or binocular format.  The AV optical engine is vendor and content-agnostic allowing for ease of integration into existing HMD products.  The design phase for the optical engine is complete.  The objective of this SBIR Phase 2 program is buildout of a prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of our optical design, the performance of our display module, and the novelty/viability of our ultra-near-to-eye form factor.  It will allow our DAF customer and end-user to evaluate applicability to aircraft maintenance and repair. On acceptance of the prototype, we plan to enter a collaborative development program with a strategic partner to integrate our technology into their existing HMD ecosystem.  This will ensure compatibility with existing DAF equipment and rapid commercialization and utilization.
