Research abstract

State-of-the-art concrete is susceptible to premature wear and the creation of Foreign Object Damage (FOD). Since all sectors of the economy rely on air travel, addressing this issue is crucial. Phase I research primarily seeks to develop a safer more durable concrete for both the DoD and commercial sectors. B-1 BombersÆ experience engine/hydraulic oil leaks, also fuel leaks containing Tricresyl phosphate (TCP). The Auxiliary Power UnitsÆ (APU) emit exhaust directly to the ground from the nacelles, reaching temperatures as high as 1,200?F. At such extreme heat, TCP decomposes into phosphoric acid (H3PO4). Hot phosphoric acid causes accelerated concrete degradation, resulting in the formation of scale. This scale poses an immediate risk to the engines, as it results in FOD. Additionally, the operational impact and the expense of prematurely replacing concrete further compound the challenge. Ā Research by both the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN) & South Dakota Mines on behalf of the 28th Bomb Wing (28BW), reveals that this concrete degradation reduces concrete life by 50%. When FOD enters the engines, mechanical failures occur, costing up to $1M per incident. ĀTheĀF-16 Fighting Falcon faces similar issues. Addressing these challenges will not only enhance safety but also optimize operational efficiency
