Research abstract

Current night vision technology, while effective in providing basic night-time visibility, often falls short in offering a comprehensive field of view, real-time data integration, and adaptability to rapidly changing situations. Specifically, AFSPECWAR operators frequently engage in missions where SA is paramount, not just for mission success but also for survivability. The limited FOV in standard night vision equipment can hinder peripheral vision, a critical aspect in dynamic combat environments. Additionally, the lack of integrated real-time data overlays means that operators must often rely on separate systems to access vital operational information, which is often either not viewable with night vision displays engaged or that hinders SA when integrated into the night vision device via a display presented in the foveal / focal FOV region, leading to increased cognitive load and potential delays in decision-making. Ā To address these limitations, Eoptic, Inc. (dba Solena Systems) proposes a Phase I effort to demonstrate the feasibility and secure end user and customer support for a Night Observation Device and Wide-Angle Tactical Colored HUD (NOD-WATCH). Our Phase I efforts for NOD-WATCH are centered around the adaptation and refinement of our enabling commercial miniaturized in-line optics digital display technology that is currently used for used for heads-up-displays (HUDs) and metrology inspection systems offered to commercial and industrial markets. Under the Phase I effort, we will refine the existing NOD-WATCH prototype to enable demonstration of the technical feasibility of the system to DAF and other DOD end user and prospective customer stakeholders. This innovative technology integrates high-resolution, full-color display capabilities with panoramic night vision, designed to enhance situational awareness and operational effectiveness in low-light environments. Ā A successful Phase I effort will set the stage for Phase II, where we will focus on development and evaluation of the full-scope NOD-WATCH solution. This will include the full quad-pano integration, as well as development of necessary connectivity and communications protocols to integrate with third-party content providers, initially targeting ATAK/SWAK for Phase II support.
