Research abstract

Solid Electrolyte Lithium Melted Aircraft battery (SELMA) Problem statement:  There is a lot of room for improvement in the range and endurance of battery electric UAS for ISR and other applications. Tied to this, there is an unmet need for batteries with the power density of lithium iron phosphate and energy density that exceeds state of the art Li-metal all-solid-state batteries.  Wright aims to develop batteries with exceptionally high energy and power density to extend the range and endurance of electric aircraft, starting with Class 2 UAS used for ISR. Wright has made significant progress in the development of a Lithium-Sulfur battery that operates at an internal temperature of 150°C. Operating at elevated temperature opens the door to higher electrode bulk and greater packaging efficiency. Extensive use of polymers reduces weight and improves shock and vibration tolerance. The replacement of Sulfur with Selenium may enable much higher power density. In the proposed program, Wright Electric will: ??????? Verify 10C and higher discharge rates are possible in a Lithium-Selenium battery Report achieved and potentially achievable specific energy: Phase I Target > 500 Wh/kg,  Phase II target > 900 Wh/kg  Align our planned lightweight UAS battery with USAF stakeholder requirements???????
