Research abstract

There is an immediate need for DAF bases to prevent attacks from unmanned air vehicles (aka drones) which are proliferating across the world. In addition, DAF also operates in theaters in an expeditionary role, where they cannot rely on the availability of power, communications, and RF spectrum. These expeditionary missions also need a stand-alone system for air traffic monitoring where both manned and unmanned air traffic may be operating,. To address these needs, we propose to demonstrate a rapidly deployable, transportable "air-traffic-monitoring-system-in-a-box". This is a military version of a commercially-available solution that Kalscott has developed recently. The system provides the end-user with a visualization and detailed information about manned and unmanned air traffic in the vicinity. We have already identified multiple DAF end-user groups (see included letters of end user and customer need and support), and have investors ready to provide additional funds to accelerate the transitioning of this technology to military and government users (see attached Investor Letter). In Phase I, we will conduct a feasibility study to identify the specific customizations that are required for DAF end-users. In addition to the customers and end-users already identified, other DAF groups will be contacted for input in this regard. Plans for Phase II implementations and transitions will be refined. In Phase II, the customizations will be implemented, and the systems will be tested and evaluated at one or more DAF end-user sites. In addition, work will be initiated on specific pathways towards transitioning the products into service.
