Research abstract

XTEMP provides near-instantaneous, contactless core temperature measurement using commercially available thermal cameras. XTEMP collects thermographic data from the surface of the eye, processes the data through multiple computational layers, and accurately determines the temperature at the back of the eye, close to the brain–where body temperature is most accurate. XTEMP radically improves the availability of accurate core temperature measurements using inexpensive cameras small enough to be integrated in smartphones, helmets, masks, and countless other devices. Trauma-induced hypothermia is present in up to 66% of severely injured patients upon arrival to an emergency room– doubling the risk of death. Despite these high stakes, temperature data is missing for 20% of all battlefield military casualties because accurately measuring core temperature on the battlefield currently requires invasive methods– primarily through the rectum.  XTEMP aims to enhance battlefield medicine by allowing combat medics to accurately measure core temperature rapidly, without contact, using devices medics already carry–such as a tactical phone thereby improving survivability of trauma-induced hypothermia through the earliest identification.
