Research abstract

AFFF is used in fire suppression systems because it delivers the unmatched extinguishing properties. However approved versions contain PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are a class of about 15,000 compounds. PFAS has been linked to cancer, birth defects, decreased immunity, high cholesterol, kidney disease and a range of other serious health problems. Pyrochill has pioneered a non-toxic, VOC-free, Green Seal certified, biodegradable formulation. PYROCHILL’s unique formulation fights fires utilizing its proprietary triple action by disrupting the combustion stage of a fire cycle, including the prevention of “flash-overs” and “thermal runaway, preventing reignition using a powerful combination of ingredients that physically isolate combustible fuels by creating a char/ceramic barrier, thereby preventing or greatly reducing the possibility of reignition; Oxygen Deprivation - PYROCHILL also has a combination of ingredients that reduce free atmospheric oxygen when encountering heat or flame which leads to a less volatile atmosphere. PYROCHILL’s foundational borate-based ingredients also possess powerful anti-corrosive and anti-mold characteristics that protect DAF equipment, reducing maintenance and repair costs and allowing more flexibility and reduced risk of equipment failures. In 2023, the Pentagon released new requirements for PFAS-free firefighting foam. The DoD has until October 2023 to ensure there’s a deployable alternative foam which meets the new performance standards. It then has one additional year, until October 2024, to stop using PFAS entirely. Pyrochill is poised to solve this problem by meeting all the AFFF MIL-SPEC requirements.
