Research abstract

Executive Order 14008 and 14057 mandated the Department of Defense (DoD) to shift from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE) to battery electric vehicles (EV) by 2035 to achieve zero emissions and reduce fuel costs. However, limitations of battery technologies, particularly slow charging and complex manufacturing, remain the major obstacle for accelerating transition to EVs. Specifically, current batteries charge slowly (>1 hour) while their low energy densities result in low EV ranges, both highly undesirable for DoD combat operations. A typical 400V lithium battery pack consists of over 300 cells (~4V each) and 10,000 components connected together, requiring complex, sensitive and costly fabrication processes. EV batteries commonly use liquid electrolytes which is flammable/explosive and causes poor charging when used in extreme environments. Lasagna.one overcomes the limitations with two novelties: the use of high ionic conductivity solid state electrolytes which are inflammable (increased EV safety) and have higher ionic mobility than liquid electrolytes to provide fast-charging (<5min) comparable to current ICE refueling times. Unlike conventional battery packs (>300 cells = battery pack), our novel bipolar stacked architecture allows us achieve to 400-1,000V in a single battery cell (1 cell=battery pack), streamlining both battery design and the manufacturing process.
