Research abstract

Current 2D displays and physical models hinder the speed at which space operators master complex and counterintuitive space concepts. Extended reality exceeds 2D training in many fields, yielding accelerated learning and higher retention of complex concepts, and has strong applicability for the spatiotemporal relationships critical to understanding the space domain. Our KWYN™ SOLAR extended reality space domain application accelerates learning of orbital mechanics by enabling new learners to rapidly disambiguate spatiotemporal relationships by immersing them in interactive 4D space. We will extend our KYWN SOLAR application to develop KWYN SOLAR FX, expanding the scope of supported training content beyond orbital dynamics to enable users to rapidly comprehend natural and human-made hazards, which is critical for operating in and defending our space interests. We will demonstrate and evaluate the technical feasibility of KWYN SOLAR FX as an extended and advanced training tool and perform customer discovery of multiple USSF units to better understand the advanced training needs and define the research and development needed to meet the requirements of tomorrow’s Guardians. To demonstrate KWYN SOLAR FX feasibility, we will incorporate space weather data and tailored visualizations (e.g., field lines, volumetric surfaces, hazard highlights, risk zone).
