Research abstract

Guardians entering the US Space Force (USSF) require actionable comprehension of the space domain’s unique constraints and attributes during complex operations. However, many of the 2D tools used to convey this information hinder Guardians’ ability to grasp the dynamic, counterintuitive space environment, requiring significant mental spatial transformations that slow decision-making and cause costly errors. Traditional methods fail to provide a tangible understanding of the space domain, resulting in loosely learned concepts and miscommunication. The multidisciplinary, rapidly evolving nature of space effects—both natural (solar activity) and human-made (adversary satellite constellations)—adds complexity not addressed by current systems. Educators and operators consistently highlight the need for immersive, scenario-driven tools offering intuitive visualizations of space mechanics, environments, and assets. KWYN® SOLAR FX (KSFX) addresses these gaps by leveraging advances in spatial computing to deliver immersive, interactive, data-rich experiences that reduce cognitive load, enable rapid orientation, and support collaborative, multidomain training, planning, and briefings. Based on customer discovery across multiple USSF commands, our proposed KSFX effort addresses unmet, critical needs by enabling users to directly visualize, interact with, and understand the dynamics associated with maneuvers such as plane transfers and rendezvous and proximity operations (RPOs). KSFX also incorporates a number of key functionalities, including dynamic scene masking and filtering (e.g., based on the location of objects at a specific time or proximity to other objects), high-density datasets and computations that are too large to run on headsets to a headset-accessible server, and the capability to visualize and understand space weather and its effects, which is a capability that does not yet exist in extended reality applications due to the complications of translating the data for use. KSFX provides the USSF a transformative operational advantage, ensuring Guardians are equipped with the skills and technologies needed to gain a rapid understanding of the space picture and maintain space superiority. This solution strengthens combat power projection, enhances domain awareness, and improves information mobility by enabling decision-making and continuous rehearsal and refinement of operational concepts.
