Research abstract

The adoption of backscatter communication technology can fundamentally revolutionize how the US Air Force communicates, monitors, and operates in various capacities. A successful effort will result in a new highly capable Standard Protocol Backscatter Communication (SP-BSC) enabled wireless system which addresses battery life, one of the most critical hurdles to widespread adoption of wireless sensing in vital infrastructure sensor monitoring applications and will also provide a first demonstration of a counter-jamming capability which could be incorporated into future iterations of this sensing platform for added robustness. The blend of power efficiency, interoperability, and resistance to jamming makes Jeeva’s SP-BSC technology an ideal candidate to advance IoT sensor technology within the Air Force. The unique features of the SP-BSC technology allow for robust, low-maintenance sensor networks that can resist potential disruptions, promoting the resilience and safety of wireless communications where it’s needed most. In Phase I, Jeeva hopes to map Air Force-specific use cases for backscatter communications (Maintenance & Logistics, Strategic Communications & Command Control, and Remote Sensing & Surveillance), specifically focusing on sensor network utilization for the AFRL as the first potential customer (CMSgt Carlos E. Labrador).
