Research abstract

Current Navy weapon test and training ranges require the use of a range-qualified Telemetry and Flight Termination System (TMFTS) for a variety of reasons that include, but are not limited to, large weapon or surface danger zones. Many existing weapons use TMFTS, but the systems are unique to the weapons into which they are integrated. If every weapon that required a TMFTS had been able to use the same TMFTS, the process for creating, supporting, and qualifying the systems would have significantly reduced the test and training time, cost, and complexity while increasing operational safety. To address this Navy need, Intellisense, Inc. (Intellisense), a leader in avionics systems, proposes to develop an innovative Automated, Universal, Flight and Telemetry Termination Safety (ARTEMIS) system, based on the combination of low size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) 3U/6U open VPX modules. The innovation in ARTEMIS will address the Navy’s need for a universal TMFTS. During this Phase II effort, Intellisense will develop a field-ready, TRL-5/-6, prototype and test it in a laboratory environment. Intellisense will also work very closely with the Navy to reduce the risk of integrating the universal TMFTS with various test and training platforms.
